BBR Makes The Mazda MX-5 Punchier With Two New Tuning Packages

Mazda tuner BBR has launched more aftermarket upgrades for the MX-5. Available for the 2019MY car onwards, they lift the output of the 2.0-liter SkyActiv-G engine, creating a more engaging driving experience.

The first package is called the Super 200. It adds the tuner’s cold air intake system, stainless steel exhaust manifold, K&N air filter and StarChip ECU remap, lifting the output by more than 18 PS (18 hp / 13 kW) and 14 Nm (10 lb-ft) of torque, to 202 PS (199 hp / 149 kW) and 224 Nm (165 lb-ft) of torque.

Pricing starts from £1,245 ($1,583/€1,399) without tax for the self-install package, destined for export markets. BBR can also convert the MX-5 at their Brackley headquarters, in the UK, for £1,445 ($1,837/€1,624), tax excluded.

The Super 220 package is a tad pricier, at £2,235 ($2,842/€2,511) and £2,895 ($3,681/€3,253), respectively, without tax, but it makes the petrol-burner more powerful. With the addition of the Super 200’s mechanical components and high-performance camshafts, valve springs and retainers, the peak output has been measured at 221 PS (218 hp / 163 kW) during internal testing, and torque at 217+ Nm (160+ lb-ft), using 99-octane gasoline. Both packages have a 12- to 36-month extendable warranty.

“This is the first time that over 100 hp per liter has been achieved from a normally aspirated Mazda MX-5 motor without internal modifications”, said the tuner’s managing director, Neil McKay. “And additional development has seen BBR achieve more than 110 hp per liter with the inclusion of our bespoke performance camshafts, which is astonishing for a road-friendly engine that now also produces over 150 lb-ft from just 3,000 rpm.”

BBR also has other upgrades in store for this popular Japanese roadster, like the 2.5-inch center exhaust section with a choice of rear silencers, for the Super 200 and Super 220 upgrades, which add a few more horses to the package, and the 4 into 1 high flow, tuned length stainless steel exhaust manifold that incorporates a performance catalytic converter.
