The Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital, attached to K.A.P. Viswanatham Medical College, plans to shift trauma and emergency ward to the front portion of multi-specialty treatment block.

The ward has so far been functioning at the rear in the ground floor of the block as it was constructed about six years ago. There was a view that the trauma and emergency ward should be located at the front portion so as to enable patients being brought in ambulances to get admitted immediately. Based on feedback from the public, it has been decided to relocate the ward.

S. Saradha, Dean, said that ₹ 25 lakh had been earmarked for creating necessary infrastructure in the ward. It would have all facilities for triage and emergency treatment. The ward would be set up within a few metres from the portico of the multi specialty block. It would have two bays for treating patients brought under emergency condition.

She said that the ward would operate round the clock to provide health care for the acutely ill and injured. Upon arrival, patients would be subjected to triage mechanism so as to categorise patients. Based on their illness, they would be segregated into three categories. After providing emergency treatment, the patients would be moved to wards concerned. It had been decided to complete the work in two weeks. It would be opened for public shortly, she added.
