TRICHY: After battling for life in a
government hospital for two days after sustaining a head injury at her school, 12-year-old R Ilakkiya died without responding to treatment on Tuesday. A student of class VII at Methodist Girls Higher Secondary School, she had an accidental fall from the stairs at her school on Friday. She developed internal bleeding in her head after it banged on the stairs.
As Ilakkiya died around 8 am, her classmates and their
parents staged a demonstration in front of the school seeking action against the teachers for negligence. They accused the teachers of not taking her to the hospital even two hours after the fall which deteriorated her health condition and eventually led to her death. As reported, students who were with Ilakkiya on that day said that the teachers didn’t bother to take her to hospital though she was writhing in pain. “They waited till her parents arrived and took her to hospital ignoring our request,” said students. The students had on Monday approached the district collector with a petition seeking action against the teachers.
Following directions from the collector, Woriayur police carried out an inquiry on Monday while the chief educational office too started a probe into the incident. The school management maintained that they were waiting for the parents to come as there was no bleeding but only swelling on her head. A police team led by
Srirangam range assistant commissioner of police K Ramachandran held talks with the protesters on Tuesday and promised to act following which they dispersed from the spot.
Trichy district educational officer M Ramakrishnan told TOI said that an inquiry was on. “After carrying out the inquiry with teachers, students and parent we will ascertain the charges from both sides and take appropriate action,” he said.
