RAJKOT: The various district administrations have shifted nearly 1.70 lakh people living in low-lying areas in all coastal areas like Veraval, Porbadnar, Jamnagar, Dwarka, Bhavnagar and Gandhidham to safer places before the ‘Vayu’ strikes.
Nearly 20,000 people have been shifted from various talukas of Kutch. Remya Mohan, Kutch collector told TOI, “We are still identifying people living in low-lying areas and shifting them. Maximum people have been shifted from Gandhidham taluka, near Kandla.” Kutch, which is bracing for heavy rainfall and high tide have evacuated all the coastal villages and closed down Mandvi beach for the tourists since Wednesday.
In Gir Somnath district nearly 18,000 people have been evacuated from 101 villages, while pilgrims to Somanth temple have been asked to stay put in their hotels or guest houses and not to venture near the sea. Total six teams of NDRF are deputed in Kodinar, Una, Sutrapada and Veraval talukas. The Vadodara Municipal Corporation’s 23 teams too have reached for relief and rescue operation.
