An ice addict who is responsible for the death of a teenage boy in a horror car crash has received more jail time for speeding while escaping officers.

Aaron Hyde, 22, appeared at the Northern Territory Supreme Court on Wednesday where he was jailed for an extra two years for escaping officers and speeding in a school zone.

Hyde was serving an eleven-year sentence when he escaped from jailers during a medical appointment at Royal Darwin Hospital in April 2018.

He was the driver in a high-speed crash that killed his friend Ashley Richards, 18, who was in the passenger seat in September 2015.

Hyde hit a female guard in the face, ran away and stole a car when he was supposed to be heading back to prison last year.

The 22-year-old was still handcuffed while he was driving at speeds of up to 130km/h on the wrong side of the road and in school zones to evade police.

He told police he 'just wanted to say sorry to the family' of Ashley Richards when he was arrested after crashing the stolen car, according to NT News

Justice Jenny Blokland said Hyde's motivation was 'spontaneous'.

'I do not accept this prior motivation was around an apology, (but) I do accept he was not in a sound emotional state,' she said.

Hyde will serve a longer 13-year sentence with a non-parole period of seven years for escaping from lawful custody, unlawful entry of a house, stealing and dangerous driving during a pursuit by police.

'This was just so dangerous, not only to the community, but to himself — exactly the type of offending that caused the death of his friend,' the prosecutor said.

He was originally sentenced to eleven years in 2016 for the ice-fuelled crime spree where he stole a Commodore and the fatal crash that killed Ashley Richards.

Hyde had served time at the notorious Don Dale Youth Detention Centre prior to the crash from 2012 to 2015.
