‘There are many anomalies in tribal development concept’

Chronicle Reporter, Bhopal

Under the popular series Lokruchi Lecture Series of Indira Gandhi National Human Museum, a special lecture session was organized on Monday in the IGRMS premises. During this Prof. Vijay Shankar Sahay of Ranchi University, Jharkhand has delivered his lecture on anomalies in tribal development: “Development vis-a-vis Status quo of tribal culture”.

According to him, even after discussions on the thoughts of tribal people and different developmental schemes going on since 4-5 decades, the real aim couldn’t have been achieved as of now.

All over the world, several kinds of definitions of tribal communities are popular where tribes are a developmental facility in American island, first nation in Canada, Nationalist in China,
and Britain has categorized these tribal people who belonged to the pre-Columbian era.

India has categorized these people under Scheduled Tribes. He said that the benefits of the schemes for development aren’t reaching to all the people belonging to a particular area instead it is reaching to only a people belonging to a particular/special group.

In order to extend the development, schemes must defy the benefits to be given to the benefitted people for some time and extend its benefits to the untouched people. The constitutional rights must reach to every person.

He further said, “With the developmental activities, there’s a definite change in the culture of groups as well.

According to Lezli White, famous scientist, the pace of cultural development can also be increased using technologies.

Therefore, with the help of technologies, the empowerment can be brought in.

In this advanced era, where the global market has reached to the tribal people, the irony here is that these tribal people couldn’t reach to the global market.

There are many problems in the lives of tribes but their solutions also need attention.”

Dr Pankaj Srivastava, Director, Indian Forest Management Institute, said, “The people living beside Narmada river are living quite a simple and secure life with all the understanding and happiness maintained between their people. We can also live life like them happily in the city by giving end to all the problems.”
