NFAI to screen Girish Karnad’s films

The National Film Archive of India is paying tribute to the late  Girish Karnad with the screening of his acclaimed films like Ondanondu Kaladalli, Kanooru Heggadithi, Kaadu and Umbartha. The films will be screened till June 15 at Law College Road. 

Karnad, a multifaceted personality in Indian cinema, passed away on June 10 at the age of 81. In a career spanning more than five decades, he had forayed into various mediums including playwrighting, screenwriting, direction and acting. “Karnad’s films brought ruralism, history and mythical pathos with contemporary themes,” read a statement.  

Ondanondu Kaladalli (1978), an epic film was Karnad’s tribute to Kurosawa’s samurai films; Kanooru Heggadithi (1999) noted as comeback film of Karnad into the direction. It was another National Award winning film and was based on the novel Kanooru Subbamma Heggadithi by Kannada writer Kuvempu; Kaadu (1973) was the first solo directorial venture of Karnad; Umbartha (1981) a landmark Marathi social realist film directed by Jabbar Patel.

The films will be screened at 6.30 pm onwards.
