Commuters in Melbourne are being warned to expect extensive peak-hour delays after a car smashed into a train at a crossing. 

Train services have been suspended on the Frankston line with buses replacing trains between Cheltenham and Mordialloc. 

A spokeswoman for Victoria Police said a woman in her 70s had a 'medical episode' and drove her car onto the tracks between Mentone and Parkdale train stations just before 3pm on Wednesday.

An oncoming train hit the red hatchback as the car travelled through the train crossing on Warrigal Road.

The driver was not injured, and was treated at the scene for shock before she was escorted home. 

Metropolitan Fire Brigade crew found all of the 150 passengers on the train escaped injury.  

35 buses have been dispatched to replace trains and emergency services remain at the scene.

Commuters on the way home from work  have crowded around bus stops in cold and wet weather. 

Metro Trains said in a statement: 'Please allow extra travel time as services will be experiencing higher than normal demand.'
