Surat: Twenty-year-old Yash Mehta, has brought laurels to the diamond industry and the country by breaking the Guinness World record for the fastest time to solve 3x3x3 Rubik cube.
An aspiring astrophysicist studying in Bengaluru’s Indian Institute of Science (IIS), Yash had attempted the record with his friend Nabarun Deka by solving the cube together in 16.33 seconds. They made a vocabulary of more than 400 code words, memorised hundreds of move sequences and practiced thousands of solves in few months leading to the attempt.
Yash’s father, Mehul Mehta, who is a businessman told TOI, “Yash is not just a speedcuber, but has represented India at the International Olympiad of Astronomy and Astrophysics and won silver medal for the country at the age of 17 years. At present, he is doing research at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai.”
At a young age, Yash discovered his aptitude for logic and sciences when he secured first position internationally at the SOF international maths Olympiad twice, and cracked IIT Guwahati’s Technothlon by securing first place nationally in every single round they conducted while Yash was in class 10 and 11. However, despite making it to the IITs, Yash’s inclination for pure sciences made him choose IISc.
Four years ago, Yash and his friends had started a non-profit organisation in the city to host national competitions and workshops for the Rubik’s cube colleague Yash.
Talking with TOI from Bengaluru, Yash said, “I am proud to hold the Guinness World record for the fastest solving of Rubik cube. The world record was made, not in 16 seconds of magic, but in 16 weeks of blood, sweat and tears.”
