The Madras High Court on Monday directed the State government to put an end to the unauthorised collection of toll at the entry points of various municipal areas and village panchayats. It also imposed curbs on the collection of vehicle parking charges on vacant land adjacent to temples and ordered that the receipts should mention the purpose of such collections.
Justice R. Mahadevan directed the government to issue a circular to all Collectors with an advisory to instruct the revenue officials to conduct inspections in “each and every municipal as well as local areas” to find out if any person was involved in illegal collection of toll or parking charges. The circular should be issued in 30 days and the Revenue Divisional Officers concerned should immediately inform the Collectors and the SPs about illegal collection of toll and parking charges for initiating action.
