TIVERTON — The Tiverton Police Department held its annual Child Safety Day, which was attended by well over 300 people from Tiverton and surrounding communities who were treated to officers cooking them complimentary hamburgers and hot dogs while families enjoyed various activities.

Activities ranged from a rock climbing wall, touch-a-truck and a bicycle rodeo. Chase from Paw Patrol, Spider-Man, Smokey the Bear and T-Rex we're all on hand to help those children who attended have a great time.

The goal of the event was to raise awareness regarding several child safety issues, such as transporting children in motor vehicles, bicycle safety and child identification. During the event, over 30 child safety seats were installed and checked, ensuring these children were riding in vehicles safely. More than 100 bicycle helmets were handed out and countless child IDs were made and fingerprints recorded.

The event also helped raise money for the Injury Prevention Center of Hasbro Children's Hospital. A total of $612 was raised by the raffling off of multiple bikes and numerous gift baskets. The money donated will go towards numerous project costs of the IPC.

Michelle Andrade, a Tiverton resident and employee of First Student Bus Company, was named the recipient of the first annual Tiverton Police Department's Child Safety Hero Award. Andrade's devotion to child safety during her 12-year tenure as a bus driver for First Student earned her the recognition she truly deserved.
