Mayor V.K. Prasanth on Monday inaugurated a dry waste segregated collection hub at the health inspector office at Sasthamangalam.

The Mayor said that the hub, the first of its kind in the city, was set up to make it easy for the public to hand over segregated non-biodegradable waste. He said that dumping of waste in public spaces can be controlled by creating awareness about segregated waste collection.

Facilities have been arranged at the hub for segregated depositing of glass, paper, footwear, bags, plastic, broken glass pieces, cloth and metal waste. Corporation workers have been appointed at the hub, which will function round the clock.

The Corporation has also announced gifts for those who upload selfies from the selfie point here to the Smart Trivandrum mobile application. A questionnaire on waste management is also available here for the public, on completing which they can win gifts.

In addition to the hub, material recovery centres are functioning at 45 locations in the city as per a calender published by the Corporation. The Mayor also inaugurated a seminar at VJT Hall for sanitation workers to create awareness against burning of waste and dry leaves.

The valedictory function of the Environment Week celebrations will be held at VJT Hall at 4 p.m. on Tuesday. An exhibition to introduce various waste treatment methods will be on at the hall from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Mayor has appealed to school Principals to take students to the exhibition to create awareness on waste management.
