RPF returns lost property worth Rs 69 lakh to passengers in 2018

Mysuru: The Railway Protection Force, Mysuru division, has returned lost property worth Rs 69 lakh, which were recovered in 2018, to the passengers.
Around 137 lost and found cases were registered by the force in that year. In 2017, only 77 such cases were reported.
The railway authorities usually preserve the recovered property for 30 days in their custody and later, if unclaimed, they are put for auction.
Some commuters leave behind their luggage in the train coaches or platforms and RPF personnel get those found properties to Railway Protection Force station. After registering a case, they try to trace the owner of the property. If the owner is not traced even after a month, then the property is put on auction.
If anybody loses belongings on a train, including railway station, they can call toll free number 182. The authorities will alert the concerned RPF onboard or at the railway station. Immediately, the RPF personnel will try and trace the property.
K S Kabbur, divisional security commissioner, Railway Protection Force, Mysuru division, said, “In 2017, we had recovered properties worth Rs 10.12 lakh, which rose to Rs 69.11 lakh in 2018. Last year, a passenger who didn’t want his name to be disclosed, came to us and complained that he forgot his bag with Rs 3 lakh cash on the train. Immediately, our staff checked the train and managed to recover the cash. Similarly, a woman who left her bag containing gold bangles was also handed over the property after proper acknowledgement. The common belongings we recover are laptops, mobile phones, clothes, cash, gold ornaments and important documents.”
Mangala, a passenger who got back her lost belongings, said: “I left my bag which contained clothes; I realised only after I alighted the train. I informed the RPF who were successful in getting back my bag. Hats off to their prompt and sincere service.”
