New T-Cross Diesel Is The Most Fuel-Efficient Volkswagen SUV

Volkswagen has added a new diesel engine to the T-Cross family. Available in the SE, SEL and R-Line trim levels, it starts from £21,240 ($26,962/€23,838) in the United Kingdom and is the brand’s most fuel-efficient high-riding vehicle.

The 1.6-liter TDI kicks out 95 PS (94 hp / 70 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque and is coupled to a five-speed manual or, optionally, a seven-speed DSG automatic transmission. Naught to 100 km/h (62 mph) takes 11.9 and 12.5 seconds, respectively, fuel consumption is 52.9 mpg UK (5.3 lt/100 km / 44.1 mpg US) in the WLTP cycle, regardless of the trim level or gearbox, and carbon dioxide emissions top out at 140 g/km.

“The T-Cross is a car designed for the challenges and trials of family life, so it needs to be flexible, practical and offer an abundance of choices to tackle almost any combination of requirements”, said VW UK Product Manager Claire Haynes. “Adding a diesel engine option into the UK’s new T-Cross lineup is yet another way that our new compact SUV can offer more flexibility, choice and convenience.”

Opting for diesel power in the T-Cross won’t cut back on the usual gear found in the company’s smallest SUV. Thus, it still gets the sliding rear bench that enhances either the rear legroom or boot capacity, as well as several driving assist aids like Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Assist.

Pricing for the T-Cross starts at £16,995 ($21,574/€19,074) in the base S trim and goes up to £23,555 ($29,901/€26,437) for the R-Line. Even the most affordable version gets features like the Volkswagen Connect and Composition media systems, Blind Spot Monitor, Lane Keeping System and others.
