The Madras High Court on Monday expressed deep concern over the ever-increasing number of deaths caused by reckless driving of motor vehicles and said it was not nuclear explosions but road accidents that appeared to be the major threat to human lives in the State. The court’s observations came a day after an incident in which a 54-year-old drove his car so fast that he smashed barricades, rammed two motorcycles and injured four near Selaiyur in Chennai.
Justice N. Anand Venkatesh broached the subject immediately after entering the court hall and directed Additional Public Prosecutor M. Mohamed Riyaz to find out if the police had any effective mechanism in place in the city to track down those who ride their two-wheelers or drive their four-wheelers in a rash and negligent manner. He sought to know whether CCTV cameras had been installed across the city.
