Mysuru: Calling for
rejuvenation of waterbodies, environmentalist Kerekamegowda on Tuesday said the Supreme Court has to bring special laws to save lakes and rivers in the country.
Kerekamegowda inaugurated a workshop to prepare two lakh
seed balls to be used in barren lands. The event was organized by Janachethana Trust and Swadeshi Jagaran Manch at the Gopalaswamy Shishuvihara Institutions.
Addressing students, Kerekamegowda said he has built lakes for posterity and it is the responsibility of the youngsters to safeguard them. “Every kid should urge their parents to build lakes. In the recent days, there is deficit rainfall due to lack of clouding. Lakes and rivers are going dry. In order to save these waterbodies, more and more trees have to be planted, facilitating clouds, and it is the responsibility of the youngsters to plant trees, the environmentalist said.
Teaching students how to build lakes, Kerekamegowda said lakes can be built in those areas where the land is wet after a series of rainfall. Soon after it starts raining, the land is evenly drenched and the soil is soft and in those areas lakes can be constructed. Earthmovers make things easy, he added.
On the occasion, president of Janachethana Trust Prasanna N Gowda said rivers are drying because smaller canals are going dry. Lakshman Teertha in Hunsur taluk is the living example. In order to save rivers, canals have to be saved first. The seed ball campaign is necessary. In Nanjangud, over two lakh seed
balls of 250 varieties are being planted along with 10,000 saplings, Prasanna said.
