Though Udupi city received some rain on Monday, this is unlikely to ease the drinking water problem unless there are rains on the Karkala side.
Anand Kallolikar, Udupi Municipal Commissioner, told The Hindu that there had been little or no rains in the Karkala side or the area where the Baje dam was located.
“We are hoping that there will be rains on Monday night or Tuesday and that the situation will get some relief. We have about two days stock of water at the Baje reservoir. We are hoping for rains as it will ease the drinking water situation in the city,” he said.
The Swarna originates in the Western Ghats and passes close to Karkala town, where a dam has been constructed against it at Mundli (to supply water to Karkala town), and from there it flows down to Shiroor and Baje villages, where there are dams across it to supply water to Udupi. The river then flows close to Manipal, Shimbra, and joins the Arabian Sea.
