PANAJI: The state cabinet on Monday approved 10% reservation in jobs and educational institutions for the economically weaker section in the general category. Chief minister Pramod Sawant said that the government decision is a first of its kind in the state and will also ensure reservation for Muslims and Christians, who till date have been deprived of the benefit.
“We have approved the law passed in the Parliament to provide reservation to the weaker section of society,” Sawant told reporters. The chief minister said that approval was given without disturbing the existing reservation.
At present there are reservations for ST, SC, OBC, persons with disability, ex-serviceman and children of freedom fighters.
The Union cabinet had approved the 10% reservation in January, qualifying those with income below Rs 8 lakh per annum as ‘weaker section’.
