PUNE: A man consumed poison after assaulting his wife with a knife following a quarrel in their house near the Bibvewadi bus stop early Monday morning, police said.
Both of them have been admitted to the Sassoon General Hospital, the police said, adding that the couple would frequently fight and also had an altercation on Sunday night.
Bibvewadi police senior police inspector Muralidhar Karpe told TOI that the condition of Kundalik Pandurang Gadekar (50) and his wife, Chitra (40), was critical.
Gadekar and Chitra stay in a small house at lane number 9 in the Upper Indiranagar area. Karpe said "The man would often beat up his wife, accusing her of being infidel. The neighbours said the couple would fight frequently during the past five to six months."
Chitra's sister, Mangal Mhetre (32), lodged a complaint with the Bibvewadi police station. The police have booked Gadekar on the charges of attempt to murder and trying to commit suicide.

The officer said Chitra went to sleep on Sunday night and Gadekar woke her up around 3am on Monday. "Gaderkar abused her, which triggered another round of altercation. Within minutes, Gadekar picked up a knife and stabbed her. After Chitra started bleeding profusely, he picked up bottle of pesticide and drank it," Karpe said.
"On hearing a commotion, the neighbours raised an alarm and Chitra's sister rushed to their house," he said.
