85% of rivers cleaning drive completed

Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has completed 85% works of Rivers Cleaning Drive as on Tuesday. Target was to complete the drive by June 5 but got delayed and will take a week more to finish.
Municipal commissioner Abhijit Bangar reviewed the drive on Tuesday and directed officials to complete the works soon.
NMC has divided Nag river into four parts, Pili and Pora rivers into three each for executing the works. The drive aims to prevent flooding during monsoon and create awareness among people about conservation of three rivers.
Following TOI-MT’s Save Nag river- My City, My River campaign in 2013, the then mayor Anil Sole, now MLC, had started the drive. Excluding one year, the drive has been completed every year.

Also, the civic body has cleaned 203 of total 239 nullahs. Plan was to clean 161 nullahs through manpower and remaining 78 by roping in machines. As of Tuesday, cleaning of 151 nullahs has been done through manpower and 52 by using machines.
NMC also cleaned 14,458 of total 16,338 chambers on IRDP roads to prevent water logging on the roads. The works on remaining chambers will be completed in a week.
