Last month, the world’s media had the opportunity to test out the 2020 Supra and after experiencing what the sports car was capable of, the guys over at Car and Driver had a suspicion Toyota may have underrated the Supra’s engine.

As we reported a few weeks ago, the publication hooked up the car to an all-wheel drive dyno in Dearborn Heights, Michigan. Now, the video from that dyno run has been released, revealing how conservative Toyota seems to have been with the car’s headline figures.

According to the Japanese automaker, the Supra’s 3.0-liter BMW-sourced inline-six turbocharged engine pumps out 335 hp and 364 lb-ft (494 Nm) of torque. Those figures are fairly impressive but the red Supra tested actually delivered 339 hp and 427 lb-ft (578 Nm) at the wheels. Perhaps the most shocking result is that monumental torque figure but Car and Driver suggests it may be a little inflated as the car’s torque converter may not be fully locked until higher in the rev range.

Nevertheless, this is pretty compelling evidence that the Supra has more muscle than Toyota claims it does and goes some way to explain how some media outlets have been able to launch the new Supra to 60 mph (96 km/h) in under four seconds.

We won’t draw any final conclusions about the Supra’s horsepower and torque figures just yet but these BMW engines are rumored to offer more grunt than advertised for the past couple of years.

However, not only was the example tested a press car, but there could have been very favorable weather conditions when the dyno run was performed. To conclude that the Supra has more power than claimed, we’ll have to wait until we start seeing customer cars being tested.
