CHANDIGARH: Acting on directives of chief minister Amarinder Singh, the Punjab Police has announced a policy under which government employees and informers would be "suitably rewarded" if information provided by them leads to seizure of narcotic drugs, psychotropic and controlled substances, and forfeiture of illegally-acquired property .
The policy has been framed under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. The Punjab Police's special task force (STF) which has been formed to keep a check on the drug menace in the state, has been mandated to confirm rewards of up to Rs 60,000, while all amounts above that will be authorised by the Punjab director general of police.
The policy has been framed after chief minister Amarinder Singh, in a recent review meeting with the STF and top officials, asked the police to draft a comprehensive policy document in this regard. A clear and concise policy will facilitate granting cash rewards in NDPS Act cases in an equitable and transparent manner to all those engaged in eradication of drug abuse.
A spokesperson said on Sunday that the move was aimed at strengthening the campaign against drugs, as its progress was now being monitored by the chief minister personally as head of the newly-constituted consultative group for the scheme.
