Everton have stepped up their pursuit of defensive cover and in doing so delivered a major blow to Arsenal’s summer plans.

The Blues are being linked with a move for Getafe defender Djene Dakonam, the Togo international who is also attracting interest from Premier League rivals Arsenal.

Reports have suggested Gunners chief Unai Emery has had Dakonam watched a number of times, with Getafe having a £31m release clause in his contract.

But following the departures of three defenders this summer, Blues boss Marco Silva is stepping up his pursuit of cover.

Phil Jagielka has already revealed his exit from Goodison, while the Toffees released Wales captain Ashley Williams last Friday. On loan Kurt Zouma has returned to his parent club Chelsea after a season long stint on Merseyside, and it is unknown whether he will return.

According to Spanish outlet Marca Arsenal had been hopeful of getting the defender for less than the release clause, but Everton’s interest has seen Getafe demand the figure is met to consider selling one of their star players.

It is the latest blow to Arsenal after reports suggested Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti has ruled out a move to north London this summer.

The 25-year-old was thought to be one of Emery’s number one targets as he looks to shore up his defence ahead of next season.

But in an interview with RTL France Umtiti said: “I have a contract, I feel happy in Barcelona. I had a complicated season, but I will still be at Barcelona next season.”
