Brewing storm adds heft to monsoon

Widespread rain forecast up to June 14

With a brewing cyclonic storm powering the southwest monsoon in its march across the subcontinent, most parts of the State received intermittent heavy showers on Monday. The Met Office has forecast widespread rainfall over the next five days.

The depression in the Arabian Sea intensified into a deep depression by noon and lay centred over East Central and adjoining Southeast Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep area.

According to the India Met Department, it is very likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm over the next 24 hours and later into a severe cyclonic storm.

An orange alert indicating heavy to very heavy rain has been issued for Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Kannur districts on Wednesday.

Piravom in Ernakulam district recorded the highest rainfall (14 cm), followed by Alappuzha, Cherthala, and Nedumangad with 11 cm each.

Three casualties

In Thiruvananthapuram, two pedestrians were electrocuted when they stepped on a snapped power line submerged under storm water on a street early Monday following a night of heavy rain. One person was crushed under a falling tree on the Ernakulam Collectorate premises on Monday evening. Rain damaged several houses in Alappuzha.

Fishermen have been advised against venturing out to sea along the Kerala and Karnataka coasts.
