Ludhiana: The police on Monday claimed to have solved a 32-year-old labourer’s murder with the arrest of his wife and her alleged paramour.
Paramjit Kaur, 30, a mother of two, and Gurpreet Singh, 22, a factory worker, were arrested from Machhiwara on Sunday evening.
Paramjit and Gurpreet had allegedly strangulated Satnam Singh at his house in Dhanoor village of Machhiwara on Saturday night. Before killing him, the duo made him drink liquor and told neighbours that Satnam died of excessive drinking. However, neigbhours sounded the police after noticing strangulation marks on his neck.
Machhiwara police station SHO inspector Raman Inderjit Singh said, “The two were caught while they were trying to flee on a motorcycle. They had been planning the murder for the past one week. As part of the plan, Paramjit had sent her children to her parents’ house. With his turban, Gurpreet along with Paramjit strangulated Satnam.”
Police said Gurpreet, a former colleague of Satnam, and Paramjit had been in a relationship for the past one-and-a-half years.
After committing the murder, Gurpreet was hiding in Machhiwara. On Sunday, he asked Paramjit to meet him. They were arranging money to make good their escape when police raided their hideout.
Satnam’s brother Joga Singh said, “Gurpreet was Satnam’s friend. One day, Satnam invited him to his house where he met Paramjit. As Paramjit and Gurpreet developed illicit relations, he started visiting her when Satnam was not at home. After Satnam caught them red handed, he stopped Paramjit from meeting Gurpreet. The duo then conspired to eliminate him.”
