NEW DELHI: The
Delhi government has received feedback from 3,700 people about its scheme to allow
free rides to women in
Delhi Metro services, DTC and
cluster buses. Transport minister
Kailash Gahlot said that most of the suggestions and views are highly appreciative of the scheme. The government believes that the scheme will enhance women safety by encouraging more and more women to use public transport. CM Arvind Kejriwal announced the plan on June 3.
The government sought people’s feedback and suggestions. The suggestions may go on to shape the proposal being prepared to give a blueprint for the rollout of the scheme. "The suggestions are pouring in since the day the announcement of the plan was made. There is an overwhelming response to the scheme," said an official.
AAP MLAs are conducting meetings to seek the views of the public on the scheme and will keep doing so in the weeks to come. Kejriwal has also gathered public feedback on the scheme and stated that most of the women appreciated it.
In reaction to the public feedback which continues to pour in everyday, the transport department extended the deadline for receiving the feedback. Now people can send in feedback at delhiwomensafety@gmail.com or to the Dialogue and Development Commission by post till June 30, earlier the deadline was till June 15 only.
Since the assembly elections in Delhi are approaching, the government wants to implement the scheme in two to two and a half months so that women start receiving the benefits of free rides before Delhi votes to elect a new assembly.
Back to back meetings involving officials of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, DTC and DIMTS and Delhi government officials are going on to plan the execution of the project. Before the launch of the project the government needs to finalize many things like deciding the way women will be allowed to avail the offer, taking a final call on whether women passengers using metro network anywhere in Delhi-NCR will also be able to avail the scheme. Gahlot said that the government wants to allow all women using the metro network anywhere in Delhi NCR to avail the free ride facility.
Sources said that women may be given free tokens for the free rides in the Metro while and color-coded passes to avail the free rides in DTC and cluster buses. The government is also exploring to give tickets to women for availing the free ride facility in the DTC and cluster buses. “The women riding the buses will have to take tickets. The tickets will have the cost of the travel printed on it but when it will be given to a woman, the ticket will mention the 100% subsidy given by the government and thus the total price being paid by the woman will be zero,” said sources. It is part of a proposal put up before the transport department.
