‘60,000 tonnes of gypsum still left at Sterlite plant’

Collector Sandeep Nanduri on Monday said about 60,000 tonnes of gypsum was still left at Sterlite plant, while other chemicals had been removed. “Gypsum is being moved after identifying buyers,” he said.

He said the World Environment Day would be celebrated on June 14 at the Thoothukudi Medical College.

Twelve thousand saplings would be planted, and various competitions are being conducted for students as part of the celebration. A cyclathon and human chain would also be organised, he said.

The saplings would be planted at all government schools simultaneously, he said.

Mr. Nanduri said that 765 children have been enrolled for LKG and UKG classes at 37 anganwadi centres in the district for the academic year.

He said that 67 mechanised boats, which do not fit into the norms under the Tamil Nadu Marine Fisheries Regulation Act, are seeking to registered under the Mercantile Marine Department.

“Officials from the MMD would be checking the boats, and would be allowed to go fishing if they meet the norms at the end of the fishing ban period. The Assistant Director of Fisheries will provide the approval with technical support from the MMD,” he said.
