Two people drowned in separate incidents in Mumbai on Sunday.
Bhairav Ramesh Bariya (11), a resident of Arthur Road, had gone to Marine Drive with his seven-year-old brother Hemant without informing their parents about it.
According to the boys’ aunt, the two had reportedly told their parents that they were going to the neighbouring area to play. Around 3.15 p.m., Bhairav ventured into the sea and drowned. He was pulled out by fishermen and handed over to the police who took him to G.T. Hospital.
Dr. Shivaji Pawar, medical officer of G.T. Hospital, said the boy was declared dead on arrival. The police handed over the body to his parents. Bhairav and Hemant were studying in Shantinagar School near Arthur Road. A relative, who did not wish to be named, said, “Bhairav never used to go so far away from their area. He was academically brilliant. I don’t know what happened.”
In the second incident, a 40 year-old man drowned at Juhu’s Silver Beach. Mahesh Maruti Shinde, who lived in Andheri (East) and had come to the beach for an outing with his family, had gone for a swim. Around 2.30 p.m., the current got strong and Mahesh, who was already swimming quite far away from the shore, got pulled inside.
“Mahesh ventured too much into the sea, and by the time lifeguards noticed him, he was already about 300 feet from the shore,” senior police inspector Pandharitinath Wavhal, Juhu police station, said.
The fire brigade, who were alerted around 2.40 p.m., joined the rescue operation started by the lifeguards. Two fire engines from Andheri West fire station were sent to the spot, and one boat was used for the search.
Mahesh’s body was found by the fire brigade after several hours of searching and was taken to Cooper Hospital. He was declared dead on arrival. His body was bloated from drowning.
