LUCKNOW: An application software designed a year ago to gauge the academic ambience in government schools has failed to yield desired results allegedly due to the laggard attitude of a section of education officials.
Authorities in 42 out of the 75 districts either skipped the mandatory classroom inspections or judged teaching standards, attendance, infrastructure and basic amenities in schools without spending the requisite time on the respective campuses.
The Eeksha app was developed with technical support from Unicef, and in collaboration with Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and State Council of Educational Research and Training, to ensure that students were taught in an adequate academic set-up. It was equipped to collect data on quality of education, attendance, infrastructure and basic amenities in schools.
The collection of data for assessment of teaching in primary and upper primary schools was tasked to assist block resource centre coordinators across the state.
“However, we have information that coordinators in 42 districts did not spend the mandatory 30 minutes on campuses. They instead completed formalities by making requisite entries in the app in less than two minutes,” said director of basic education Sarvendra Vikram Bahadur Singh.
Apart from this, the coordinators also failed to fill in the entries properly, defeating the whole purpose of launching the app.

“The coordinators were required to record videos of classes in session, but many skipped this bit because they never visited the classrooms. They sent incomplete data to the headquarters without realising that every action is being monitored. The department has been unable to judge the teaching standards in government schools owing to the laziness of those entrusted with the groundwork,” said another senior official.
Director Singh has now directed district basic education officers to conduct an appraisal of every coordinator and take action against those whose performance is found to be less than 60%.
