Thieves strike at trader’s house, get away with cutlery set

Ludhiana: A silver cutlery set was all that thieves could lay hands on during their two-hour stay at a house of a paper mill owner in Sector 39 in Ludhiana on Saturday. Importantly, the house owner and his family members were fast asleep in their rooms all this time.
With their faces covered and carrying sharp-edged weapons, the five thieves struck at the house in the early hours. After spending more than two hours in the house, the accused, however, did not find anything valuable following which they fled with a silver cutlery set.
At around 6am, when house owner Davinder Kumar, 52, woke up, he found the house ransacked. Further on checking the CCTV cameras installed in the house, he found out about the thieves’ movement and sounded the cops.
Davinder lived with his wife, two sons and daughter-in-law. On Friday, the family had an engagement ceremony of their younger son. They returned home at around 11.30pm and went to sleep.
Davinder said as they all were tired, they did not hear any movement of burglars in the house. It was after scanning CCTV footages, they found out that the accused had entered all rooms of the house. They had opened the almirahs, but found nothing. There was a bag of shagun envelopes in the room that they had picked up and but later forgot to take it with them.
He said, “As the accused carried sharp-edged weapons, we feel fortunate that they did not harm us.”
Inspector Pargat Singh, SHO, Moti Nagar police station, said the police have registered a case against unidentified accused under Sections 457 (house trespassing) and 380 (theft) of the IPC.

The inspector said there might be some known person behind the theft bid. It is suspected that the accused knew about the function in family and they thought that nobody was there in the house. When they entered the bedrooms, they found family members sleeping. But they did not even make any noise despite having weapons, he added.
The police have initiated investigation into the matter.
