THURSDAY, JUNE 13
THE HANDMAID'S TALE 8.30pm, SBS ★★★
If it weren't for the fight for liberation outside Gilead, there would be little to save the meandering storyline of misery inside it. Of course, the movement couldn't exist without the oppressive world in which bonnetted women creep along eerily stocked supermarket aisles. These are the very images that seem so sickly enticing, despite them mirroring women's lives in some parts of the world. Tonight, red-caped crusader, June (Elisabeth Moss), dons a disguise.
FINDING JOY ★★★½ 10.15pm, ABC Comedy
The more Amy Huberman's newly single happiness vlogger unravels, the more interesting she becomes. While this episode is still augmented with slapstick and cringe humour (she's sprung sitting on the toilet and talking to herself), the comedy is collecting dark dimensions. A wellness retreat sets the scene for some obvious sight gags but this is also where the character garners some personal insight, making her infinitely more likeable and relatable.
MASTERCHEF AUSTRALIA 7.30pm, Ten ★★★
Having sold off her supermarket products, beloved cook (as distinct from "chef", as her long-running series with Simon Bryant made plain), Maggie Beer drops in to the MasterChef studio to preside over a two-round elimination challenge. Yes, there are too many cooks in this kitchen, and someone has to go. It's all about spices today and herbs picked fresh from the garden. The keen home cook stands to pick up a few tips from this veteran of the stove.
