Activist and rationalist Dr. Ram Puniyani will be provided with police protection during investigation into the threat calls he claimed that he received from unknown persons on Thursday. Dr. Puniyani was assured protection after he met with Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 11) Sangramsinh Nishandar on Saturday.
“I will be given round-the-clock police protection until such time that the police catch the persons behind the threats that were made to me,” Dr. Puniyani told The Hindu. The rationalist met Mr. Nishandar, who is holding additional charge of Zone 10, at 4.30 p.m. on Saturday, along with a few other activists and friends to discuss the incident.
On Thursday, Dr. Puniyani received an anonymous phone call around 8.30 p.m. on his landline. The caller, according to Dr. Puniyani, hurled abuses at him, calling him anti-Hindu, and threatened him, stating he would face consequences if he did not stop his activities.
After receiving the call, Dr. Puniyani approached the Powai police on Friday and a non-cognisable complaint was registered against unknown persons for intentional insult to provoke breach of peace and criminal intimidation under the Indian Penal Code.
