'I felt like I was in jail': Hundreds are trapped in Sydney Opera House car park for SIX HOURS after road closes for Vivid light show

  • At least 60 cars were trapped bumper to bumper until 11.30pm on Saturday
  • Children, elderly and some disabled people were those stuck underground
  • One woman who was trapped said she got into a 'panic' and had to call police
  • Wilson, the parking company, erected a sign about road closures the next day

Hundreds were stuck in the Sydney Opera House car park for six hours after the road was closed for the Vivid light festival.

At least 60 cars with children, elderly and some disabled people were bumper to bumper at the parking lot after the Macquarie Street exit in Sydney city was blocked until 11.30pm on Saturday.

Wheel-chair bound man Graham Hayter and his wife Nicole Milatos-Hayter had no idea they would spend the night trapped in the Wilson car park.

'I've never been in jail before but I felt like I was in jail for not committing a crime,' Mr Hayter told 9News.

Ms Milatos-Hayter said she 'got into a panic' and called police to let them know about the 'emergency' situation.

Thoughtful passengers offered the couple, who were stuck for four hours, some water and chips.

Passengers were left furious, saying there was no warning sign about road closures for the event which attracts more than two million people.

Wilson put up a sign at the at the car park entrance reading 'No exit from Opera House Park 5pm-midnight, Sat 8 & 9 June 2019', following the incident.

The car park company said warning signs had been previously put in a place – a claim which commuters deny.

'It was ludicrous just how disorganised it was,' said commuter Blake Edwards.

'It was awful. The kids were starting to feel sick,' said Linda Fuller.
