NASHIK: Cyber theives allegedly cheated a city industrial unit of Rs 3.4 lakh US dollars between November 2018 and March 2019, the city police said.
The complaint to the effect has been registered with the city cyber police team. The company officials have alleged that the cyber thieves created an email address similar to that of a Japanese firm they were dealing with. They were instructed to transfer money and thereby cheated.
The case is related to Koso India Pvt Ltd located in Ambad MIDC, Nashik. The company regularly transfers money related to their business in Japan.
However, in November 2018, the city-based company received a notification through company’s internal email system, asking its finance department to deposit the amounts in a new bank account created by the company. The domain of the email ids and the addresses were the same.
“Since the email ids were familiar and the communication was marked to two important officials of the company, there was no chance for any of us to doubt it. Accordingly, we started sending the sum to the new accounts from time to time,” an official from the Nashik unit of the company stated in the complaint.
The matter came to light in March, when for accounting purposes, the Japan-based office requested for the money transfer that was allegedly pending since November.

“Following this communication, we sent the details of the transactions to the Japan office. They denied that they had received any such money transfer. The office also communicated that there was no other bank account of the company either in Japan or outside Japan,” the officer of the city-based industrial unit.
The cyber police said it was a case of impersonation and cheating of the industrial unit by unidentified persons. The origin of the crime will have to be found out and it is likely to be an international team of hackers. Police feel that the suspects were tracking the regular transactions of the company and then executed the crime.
