Queen's Birthday 2019 public holiday guide: What’s open, what’s closed and what's on in Melbourne
Queen's Birthday is a public holiday held on the second Monday in June to celebrate the longest-reigning British monarch in history, Elizabeth II. (Although it's not, in fact, her actual birthday, which is on April 21 - she turned 93 this year.)
It's one of the two days every year that an Honour's List is released – the other being on Australia Day – where outstanding citizens are recognised with a coveted Order of Australia medal.
It's also the last long weekend Victorians will get to enjoy until September 27 for the AFL Grand Final. So make the most of it, because it's going to be a long winter.
Monday, June 10, will be a public holiday in all states and territories except Queensland and Western Australia.
Here's a list of what's open in Melbourne, what to do and how to get around this public holiday.
What's on
Big Freeze at the 'G: 11.30am-6pm. The Collingwood v Melbourne blockbuster AFL match will see supporters help FightMND raise money to fund research for a cure for motor neurone disease. A Walk to the 'G will be hosted before the game, with Demons fans marching to the MCG from Federation Square at 1.15pm and Pies fans from the Holden Centre at 1.45pm. Check the website for more details.
