Videos of Haryana woman beating mother-in-law get her arrested

The footage prompted the state machinery to take swift action in the case
CHANDIGARH: Three days after the two videos of a Haryana woman beating her 80-year-old widowed mother-in-law at their house in Niwaznagar village of Mahendergarh district went viral, Haryana police on Saturday arrested the accused.
The woman, identified as Kanta Devi, has been booked in a case of trespass, assault and criminal intimidation registered against her at Narnaul's police station. The court has remanded her to judicial custody, said police.
Two clips shot by a neighbour showed Kanta shoving and thrashing Chand Bai, the widow of a retired BSF inspector, who is sitting on a cot in the courtyard of the house. The video, shot on Monday and Tuesday, had gone viral on social media platforms over three days.
‘Woman used to take mom-in-law’s pension’
After the video clip reached the chief minister’s office (CMO), orders were issued for registration of a case against the daughter-in-law.
Following this, the cops went to Chand Bai’s place, recorded her statements and got her medically examined. Later, a case was registered and the police began to search for the daughter-in-law, who had left home once the video had gone viral.
It was learned that the assailant daughter-in-law was arrested from somewhere in the national capital.
Chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar described the incident as "deplorable and condemnable" and said such behaviour should not be tolerated in a civilized society. He also tweeted about registration of a case and the arrest of the Kanta.

Mahendergarh SP Chandermohan confirmed the arrest of the woman.
"She (accused) considered the old woman to be a burden. That is why she assaulted her. She also used to force her mother-in-law to hand over the family pension she got after her BSF official husband’s death,’’ cops associated with investigation said.
