Dharwad: Highlighting the role of information technology in the present era, director of Malaviya National Institute of Technology Udaykumar Yaragatti stated that technology-centered India is the need of the hour and graduating students should acquire the necessary skills.
Speaking at the ninth graduation ceremony of SDM College of Engineering and Technology here on Saturday, he said graduation is clearly an end to the long sequence of subjects, tests and examinations, but, more importantly, it is a great beginning of a new career, a new life as an engineer. “Education is more than just knowledge and skills; it is about shaping better citizens,” he added.
“Modern technology tells us that true knowledge comes only from repeatable, verifiable experimental observations followed by logical reasoning. Here lies the danger of misinformation that we see every day in social media. Unfortunately, one of the wrong influences of social media is making us all believe that whatever is popular is true and is the right thing to do,” Yaragatti added.
Additional competencies are to be acquired to face the current areas of challenges in environment, water, energy transportation, cyber security communication and trade. Thus the new and young India can lead the world, he explained.

Shri Dharmasthla Manjunatheshwar University, Dharwad, vice-chancellor Niranjankumar in his presidential remarks congratulated the graduating students and said that they are the brand ambassadors of the institution. The set of principles learned from the alma mater should be the guiding principles in their lives, he said. Principal S B Vanakudre presented the college report highlighting the achievements of the institution in academics, sports and other areas in addition to the infrastructure developments on campus.
The top scorer of the college, Rajashree Bhat from the department of Information Science and Engineering with a CGPA of 9.7, was awarded the Dr D Veerendra Heggade gold medal. Three top scoring students from each of the seven departments were awarded ranks and medals. A total of 543 students received their provisional degree certificates.
