The Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam has alleged that poor quality urad dhal seed has been distributed for inter-cropping in coconut groves in the Gaja-affected areas. In a statement, District Committee Member of the Sangam, M. Selvam of Pattukottai, claimed that five kilograms of poor quality urad dhal seeds were distributed by the Agricultural Department to the affected coconut farmers.
The seeds, by and large, did not germinate, and those that had sprouted did not yield any produce, he said.
The conclusion of a study-team of the district administration blaming the ryots, saying that they had not cultivated the crop properly was unacceptable, Mr. Selvam said. The report indicated an attempt by officials to cover up a “large scale scam in the purchase of poor quality urad dhal seeds from traders in Tiruchi,” he said.
