Roof tiles of a few houses and a few vehicles were damaged in group clashes that were reported in two villages under Madurai rural district police on Saturday night.
In the first incident reported at Veerapandi Nagar under Karuppayoorani police station limits, the tiles of two houses, windshields of three cars, three motorbikes and an autorickshaw were damaged.
The police said a flex board erected by a group of people for a temple festival was damaged and a couple of tube lights were broken by another group. In a retaliatory attack, properties on the other side of the village were damaged.
Karuppayoorani police have registered cases based on complaints lodged by both the groups.
In the other incident reported at Nagaiyapuram, an armed group attacked members of another group with deadly weapons, inflicting injuries on four persons.
The police said the perpetrators of the crime had nurtured anger towards the other group as they believed that they could not conduct jallikattu because of the group’s objection. There was also a quarrel over supply of drinking water between some people from both groups, which triggered the attack. Tiles of two houses and a few bikes were also damaged.
Naigaiyapuram police have registered a case of attempt to murder, damaging public property and under the provisions of the Scheduled Castes/ Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Peraiyur Deputy Superintendent of Police Mathiyalagan is investigating.
