Daily Picks M Magazine June 9 - Sunday

SUNDAY, JUNE 9

SHETLAND 7.40pm, ABC ★★★★

Newcomer Alison O'Donnell as DS Alison "Tosh" McIntosh in this British crime series based on the novels by Ann Cleeves redefines the girly swat detective. A Nancy Drew of her disillusioned times, she is young enough to slip unnoticed through dangerous urban terrain, on the trail here of a far-right collective in Norway. She's also wise beyond her years, dropping jaded one-liners in her Scottish brogue. This is a methodical and captivating mystery.

THE VOICE 7.30pm, Nine ★★★
While it's nice that unsuccessful auditionees get more than a "Thanks, next!", it seems a bit much that they must remain on stage for cuddles and commiseration from the judges. And when their families – and recently a cat – are dragged up too, it feels like good intentions have gone astray. Still, it's got to be a better approach than the old method of outright ridicule that some might recall from the Idol qualifying rounds.

EPIC WARRIOR WOMEN

Miniseries final ★★★½  7.30pm, SBS

Thanks to CG animation and a lot of educated guessing, the daily existence of Africa's 17th-Century Amazons is brought to life, making for a hugely entertaining presentation of another page of history conveniently forgotten by its mostly male keepers. With their slave raids carried out deep in enemy territory, the Agooji warrior women were apparently just as fearsome as their male counterparts. So much for the weaker sex.
