The Thripunithura police arrested a person on the charge of attempting to cheat a firm engaged in gold loan three times in a single month by allegedly pawning fake gold.
The arrested is Shafeeg Kasim, 29, of Thodupuzha. Bobby, the co-accused, however, managed to flee.
According to the police, the accused had pledged gold ornaments bearing 916 hallmark, allegedly fake, twice and then turned up for a third time within a month on Friday, leaving the manager of the firm suspicious.
The accused identified themselves as residents of Thiruvankulam when they approached the firm for the first time. They had taken a loan of ₹40,000 against genuine-looking gold ornaments on May 11 followed by a loan of ₹70,000 on May 20. However, the manager turned suspicious when they turned up again on Friday, following which he alerted the police.
The accused had allegedly mortgaged fake gold under a fake address, and they had similar cases charged against them in other police stations, the police said.
