KOLKATA: KMC has decided to install water meters in industrial and commercial establishments across the city and its outskirts. The decision was taken on Saturday following a meeting between civic authorities and officials of Kolkata Environment Improvement Project (KEIP).
Mayor Firhad Hakim, who chaired the meeting, later said the decision was taken to prevent wastage of potable water. "We took stock of water production and its supply to households and commercial and industrial establishments. We have come to the conclusion that we need to install water meters to get an idea on the consumption of water by commercial establishments to prevent water wastage and provide more water to households where crisis exists," Hakim said.

According to KMC sources, the civic body had already installed water meters in city's prime commercial establishments like malls, hotels, markets and multiplexes. "We need to install meters in factories and offices located within industrial zones. This will not only help us in planning the volume of water production but will fetch more revenue," said a KMC water supply department official.
A civic official said KMC will choose the Taratala-Garden Reach industrial area in the first phase for installing the meters. "We have studied the pattern of water consumption by industrial houses here. Now we need to install water meters to know the actual volume of potable water being consumed or wasted by these units," said a civic official.
