A man and a minor girl from Madurai attempted suicide here on Sunday, following parents’ opposition to their relationship.

A. Venkatesan, 27, an MBA graduate belonging to Arapalayam, who works as a cashier at a hotel, and the 17-year-old girl, who is studying Plus Two, eloped from their houses on June 7. The girl’s parents had lodged a complaint with Karimedu police in Madurai.

The couple, who have been in a relationship for the past two years, faced opposition from their parents as they belong to different castes.

The duo came to Kanniyakumari and toured various places, before consuming poison. They then came to Kanniyakumari police station in a distraught state and explained their reason for attempting suicide. Venkatesan then fell unconscious at the station.

They were then taken to the Asaripallam Government Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment. Their parents were informed of the incident.
