FIFA Women's World Cup 2019: Sam Kerr puts Matildas ahead over Italy

Bad challenge

Here's another look at that ugly Foord tackle on Cernoia.

50th min

Cernoia has gone down with an injury after coming off second best in a fierce challenge with Caitlin Foord. To be fair, Foord is lucky to not be booked for that tackle. She has gone high and over the ankle.

Cernoia is back on the field thankfully, that very easily could have been a lot worse for her.

Australia lead 1-0.

Elli Carpenter forces a turn over with a lightning quick interception, it sparks a counter attack that puts Hayley Raso into space inside the box. However, a poor finish sees the impressive move break down.

The team's are back out and while the Australians are in the lead, they will have to improve significantly in defence if they're to clinch three points now.

Mixed feelings

It's a tough one for us Italo-Australians, many of us torn. However, that's not the case for my colleague 'Cenzo who is cheering on his country of birth tonight.

FYI - Yours truly is hedging his bets typing in a Socceroos jersey and keeping warm with an Italy scarf. Win-win.

Half-time

Australia takes a 1-0 lead going into the break courtesy of Sam Kerr, who botched a penalty but reacted quickly to turn the rebound in on goal. It gives the Matildas a lead they perhaps deserve on the balance of play but one that isn't without controversy.

Italy feel aggrieved a goal for Barbara Bonansea was ruled out for offside. Replays showed the most minor of infringements, one that had to be zoomed in to be seen. They will argue it was perhaps line ball and they should have received the advantage as the attacking team but that remains a moot point.

Defensively, the Matildas remain at sea. The high defensive line has been caught out too often and the Italians are tactically smart enough to pry open space behind the backline. Australia will need to fix that in the second half.

Australia is lining up now for a second. An Ellie Carpenter cross finds Logarzo inside the box but her powerful header goes sailing over the bar, much to the relief of the Italians.

A sign of confidence, the Matildas are trying to play out of defence at every opportunity now and are finding more success. They've eroded the press of the Italians and are turning defence into attack in stunning fashion.
