Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem will take on each other in the final of French Open for the second time in two years as both the players aim for history at the red dust of Philippe Chatrier in Paris. For Nadal, he is looking to win a record-extending 12th Roland Garros title and complete a hat-trick of this trophy. Thiem is eyeing his first Grand Slam title at his favourite hunting ground.

Nadal has been in ominous form throughout the tournament, dropping only a single set throughout the match - against Belgian David Goffin in the third round. For Thiem, he dropped a set each in his first three matches in Paris but then registered emphatic victories in Round 4 and the quarter-final. In the semi-final though, Thiem had to battle for five sets against world No.1 Novak Djokovic to go through.

Dominic Thiem has had a remarkable fortnight, where he has shown grit, variety and the power that claycourt champions need. Thiem is referred to as the heir apparent to Rafael Nadal and in a season where Nadal has won only a single claycourt title prior to Roland Garros, the Austrian will feel this is his chance to topple the King of Clay from his seat. Thiem's five-set thrilling victory over Novak Djokovic should give him confidence but will tiredness play a part in the final?

Rafael Nadal leads Dominic Thiem 8-4 in their career head-to-head record. Only one of their last seven meeting have been on a surface other than the clay. Of their last six matches on clay, Thiem has won three but they have all come in a three-set situation. Playing on Successive Days Not a Problem for Dominic Thiem? | Thiem was happy to play for a fourth straight day when he takes on Rafael Nadal in the French Open final on Sunday. Due to rain delays, the Roland Garros schedule went haywire which means Thiem has not had a single day break before the final.

"I think it's fine. I mean, it's not the first time that that happens in tennis, and it's not going to be the last time. That's our sport," Thiem said.

However, his coach Nicolas Massu did speak to the organisers for the possibility of the final being moved to Monday but he was told it was not possible.

Thiem, on the other hand, reiterated that he was alright playing without the rest and said it would be after the tournament when he will know how tired he was.

"I'm feeling fine. I'm full of adrenaline still from today's match, and also I will have that tomorrow," he said.

"So I'm not going to be tired. It's all going to come after the tournament. So I'm ready to leave all or everything what I have out on the court tomorrow."

What Rafael Nadal Said About the French Open Final vs Dominic Thiem | "In a final like this one, the opponent is always at a very high level, but that's the rule of sports. That's why this sport is even more interesting. I think that I'm confident in myself. If I'm not able to execute my game plan, it's going to be complicated. But if I play well, and I have played well up to now, I've got all my chances. But it's always a match and anything can happen."

What Dominic Thiem Said About the Roland Garros Final vs Rafael Nadal | "To play Rafa here on this court is always the ultimate challenge, one of the toughest challenges in sports. I think it's really important that I go into the match with the belief to win. That's the most important thing. It's a big dream for me to win this match, to win this title."

Dominic Thiem is in for a second attempt at the Roland Garros men's singles title and he is up against the same man who stopped him just short last year, Rafael Nadal. Thiem beat Nadal in Barcelona Open semi-final en route to a title there. Can he achieve a similar feat at the biggest clay stage?

Rafael Nadal is referred to as the 'King of Clay' and he is arguably the greatest claycourt player to have ever graced the sport of tennis. On Sunday, Nadal will go for a 12th French Open title and his third in a row.

Thiem has spent 15 hours and 25 minutes on court at this year's Roland Garros, compared to Nadal's 13 hours and 24 minutes. Even though the number of hours spent doesn't show a huge difference, it is the fact that Thiem will be playing for a fourth straight day that might pose a bit of a problem for the Austrian.

The King of Clay Nadal has never lost a French Open final. He holds a hair-raising 92-2 win-loss record at Paris's clay but it is Thiem who has defeated Nadal on clay once in each of the last four years. Thiem wishes to turn around the result this time and Nadal wants to continue his reign as the Roland Garros magician. The final is set to be a cracker and in a few hours from now, French Open 2019 will have its men's singles champion.
