BENGALURU: In a bizarre proposal, Karnataka urban development minister UT Khader on Friday suggested installing gates with CCTV cameras along the state’s border with Kerala in Dakshina Kannada district, saying the porous “crossings” were allowing criminals to escape, besides encouraging drug-running and illegal mining.
Khader, who is the Dakshina Kannada district minister, has directed the deputy commissioner to prepare a plan for constructing “modern” gates with floodlights and closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at as many as 20 border crossings. Besides Dakshina Kannada, three other districts of the state — Kodagu, Mysuru and Chamarajanagar — border Kerala.

Khader told TOI the proposal follows a spate of political murders in Dakshina Kannada over the past few years. “Where do you think the killers went? They slipped through Kasaragod into Kerala. We have been facing a serious threat — be it vehicle-lifting or the drug mafia. Illegal mining material is being exported and truckloads of illegal sand is ferried across the smaller border crossings,” he said.
Khader said details of the plan were being worked out with district officials and police. Asked if discussions had been held with Kerala, he said, “We are ready to hold talks as it will be beneficial to have a check on border crossings for both states.” Khader said the expenses of raising the gates will be met with reclamation and rehabilitation (R&R) funds.
