To prevent burning in public places and to procure leaves for use in aerobic bins

City Corporation Mayor V.K. Prashanth on Friday launched ‘Kariyila Sambharani’, large boxes that will be used to collect dry leaves, to prevent their burning in open spaces. The launch was part of the civic body’s Environment Week celebrations.

The dry-leaf collection box address the multiple issues of burning of dry leaves and the shortage of dry leaves for processing waste in aerobic bins. The collected dry leaves will then be shredded, compressed, and taken to aerobic bins in various wards.

Such boxes will be kept in places that usually have a large deposit of dry leaves in all wards. In the first phase, they have been placed in three locations on a trial basis.

The Mayor inaugurated a dry-leaf box that was placed opposite to the Manmohan Bunglow, on the Kowdiar-Vellayambalam road. The sanitation workers in each ward will have the responsibility of the boxes.

As part of the Environment Week celebrations, the city Corporation is organising a ‘no burn campaign’.

It is aimed at weaning away the public from the habit of burning any kind of waste. Popularising alternative methods of processing waste, like kitchen bins and aerobic bins, is the focus of the campaign.

Composting melas

Composting melas are being organised at all the 25 health circles in the city. Bio- composting kiosks are set up in these circles, from where kitchen bins and inoculum can be bought. A special counter will also be set up to help train people to use kitchen bins effectively.

Demonstration

A composting mela will be held in front of the Connemara market in Palayam, where all types of composting devices will be put up for demonstration and sales.

This will include other unconventional devices that are not part of the set popularised by the Corporation.
