PUNE: A car driver withdrew Rs1.5 lakh from various ATMs, and purchased gold ornaments and other articles worth Rs72,141 after stealing a customer's debit and credit cards besides, Rs35,000 .
Kamaldeepsingh Jagdish Gulati (57), who lives with his friends in a bungalow on a rental basis at a housing society behind Adlabs in Kalyaninagar, lodged an FIR with the Yerawada police on Thursday.
"Gulati in his first information report said he used to depend on a cellphone application for hiring driver Rajesh Singh Mahi whenever he had to travel. He subsequently stopped using the app and started contacting the driver directly over phone," Yerawada police inspector (crime) Ajay Waghmare said.
"On June 2, Gulati had hired Mahi for travelling between Mumbai and Pune. He returned to Pune around 1am on June 3. As it was late, he allowed the driver to stay in the servants' quarters of the bungalow," he said.
"Before going to sleep, Gulati hanged his 'kurta' containing cash, debit and credit cards and documents such as Aadhaar and PAN cards behind the door of his room. When he woke up in the morning, he found his 'kurta' missing. He visited the servants' quarters around 11am. But Mahi had fled by then," the officer said.

Gulati tried to contact Mahi on his phone, but in vain. He later received text messages that his debit card was swiped for withdrawing Rs1.5 lakh from ATMs. He also received text messages that his credit card was used to buy gold ornaments and other articles of Rs72,141. Waghmare said Gulati suspected that Mahi had stolen the personal identification number of his debit card while paying fuel charges at a petrol pump in the city.
On the delay in lodging FIR, assistant inspector and investigation officer Balbhim Nanaware said, "Gulati had filed a complaint application, accusing Mahi of committing theft and cheating him. A preliminary inquiry was conducted and the complaint was instantly registered. We are conducting technical investigations and working on certain clues to arrest Mahi at the earliest."
