Cops bust south Kolkata gang, seize 40g heroin

KOLKATA: The narcotics cell of Kolkata Police on Thursday busted a gang of heroin sellers and consumers having links with some colleges in the city. Eight persons, all in their 20s, have been arrested in the past 24 hours. In a separate case, a man from Keonjhar, Odisha, who was allegedly carrying around 14kg ganja with him, was picked up from Babughat by Maidan police.
“We had a tip-off that some people have started selling heroin on the southern fringes of the city and most of their customers were students who would place orders over phone and get the contraband delivered at particular places in the city. The narcotics team kept the gang under scanner. They nabbed five youths from Sarat Bose Road at 11.30pm on Thursday and seized 3.5gm heroin worth Rs 8,000 from their possession. Later, the sleuths carried out another raid on S P Mukherjee Road and caught three more selling the drug. Bhowanipore police have registered a case in this regard,” said an IPS officer of the detective department.

A total of 40gm heroin worth nearly Rs 1 lakh was seized from the eight persons arrested. Of them, Raunak Jain (23), Raunak Singh(29), Lakshya Agarwal(24), Saion Banerjee(25) and Arghya Kamal Banerjee(25) are addicted to the drug.The sellers, identified as Aman Gupta(23), Asim Hait(24) and Pritam Patra(24), confessed that they had been running the business for the last three months and many college students were among their customers.
The man picked from Babughat with ganja was identified as Ranjan Tripathi.
