Cops may soon use Twitter to fight fake news

PANAJI: The Goa police could soon have its very own Twitter handle to combat fake news items that have the potential to stoke law and order situations.
IGP Jaspal Singh said the police social media cell has been established and submits daily reports. He was speaking on the sidelines of a workshop on child rights conducted for the police at Altinho, Panaji, on Friday.
Acting as a barometer of public sentiment on socially relevant issues, the cell also looks out for anything in the social media world that could have a bearing on law and order, Singh said.
“With a Twitter handle, the police will be able to immediately clarify false information and disseminate authentic information before things get out of hand,” the IGP said.
Police personnel working in the cell have received specialised training from central agencies.
